FC Barcelona were crowned champions of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday after coming from behind to beat Real Madrid (5-2) in the final played in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

Frenchman Kylian Mbappé (5) put the reigning league champions ahead, but goals from Lamine Yamal (22), Robert Lewandowski (36 from a penalty), Raphinha (39, 48) and Alejandro Balde (45+10) for the Catalans nullified Rodrygo’s free kick (60).

The Blaugrana team, who lost goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny (56) to a direct red card in the second half and saw the return of Dani Olmo, thus added a 15th national Super Cup to their list of achievements.

The night was predicted to be complicated for the Catalans after a masterful play by Frenchman Kylian Mbappé ended in the first goal of the match. The Frenchman took advantage of a counterattack to get away from Balde and unleash a cross-shot that hit the far post of Polish goalkeeper Szczesny.

But Barça soon turned the scoreboard around. Yamal tied the game in the 22nd minute after a pass into space from the Pole Robert Lewandowski, who left the Spanish international to shine with a low cross-shot with his left foot that a hitherto successful Thibaut Courtois could not stop.

When it seemed that Real Madrid were starting to scare them again, the Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga won a penalty after a tackle on Gavi, which referee Jesús Gil Manzano blew after a call from the VAR and a review on the screen.

Lewandowski converted the maximum penalty in the 36th minute with a powerful shot at medium height and very close to Courtois’ left.

Three minutes later, Raphinha struck again after taking advantage of a millimetre-perfect cross from the Frenchman Jules Koundé from far away. The Brazilian headed it with power on the run to put the third on the scoreboard.

With time running out in the first half, Yamal set up Raphinha, who passed the ball to Balde who came in from behind and shot from point-blank range, but the Belgian goalkeeper couldn’t stop it.

After the break, Vinicius provided an assist to his compatriot Rodrygo, but his right-footed shot hit the post.

Pedri provided an excellent pass to an active Raphinha who got away from the Frenchman Tchouameni and sent the ball into the back of the net.

Everything was decided, but a foul by Szczesny when he was facing the goal left the Blaugrana with ten players in the 56th minute. In addition, Rodrygo executed the free kick perfectly. The recently substituted Iñaki Peña could not stop the ball, despite having touched it.

There was still half an hour left but the score would not change and Hansi Flick scored the first title of the year and the first as Barça coach.

Between 2009 and 2011, the Catalans won three consecutive titles, beating Athletic Club in the finals in 2009 and Sevilla the following year. The third of these Super Cups, won in 2011 against Real Madrid, was the tenth that the club had won.

Valverde recognises Real Madrid's "revenge spirit" against Barcelona

Real Madrid's Uruguayan midfielder, Fede Valverde, expressed the feelings of the white squad on Saturday by saying that they want revenge on Sunday in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona, after the thrashing in the last Clásico.

"There is a lot of revenge spirit after the 0-4. It was hard to sleep that day because we didn't expect to lose like that. In the first half we had opportunities to score and in the second half they came out better and we didn't do things well. That gave us a lot of desire and strength to move forward and become the team we are today," said Valverde in the press conference before the match.

Regarding the state of mind, the Uruguayan underlined the form of his team: "We are doing very well after the first few months and tomorrow we have a good opportunity to gain confidence."

Flick says Barça will remain true to their style against Real Madrid

Barcelona's German coach, Hansi Flick, will play his first final with the Catalan club on Sunday against Real Madrid, on Sunday in the final of the Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, which he will try to defeat with his "style", as in October (4-0).

"The way we play in Madrid is our style. We did very well at the beginning of the season and there is no doubt that we should play differently," said Flick, referring to his advanced defence, in a press conference prior to the clash in Jeddah, before assuring that he expects the team to offer its best version.

Regarding the precautionary measure granted to Dani Olmo by the High Council of Sports (CSD), a state body that decided to suspend LaLiga's decision to register the player again for creating irreparable damage, the coach played down the matter.

"If there is a lot of noise outside, we have to be stronger. For us it is a great season. We have games where we have not achieved what we wanted, but it is very good to learn from each game. You can see that the team played against Athletic (Bilbao in the semi-finals) for their two teammates (also for Pau Victor) and for the club. That is what we want," he said.

Carlo Ancelotti says he is only concerned about stopping Olmo on the pitch

Real Madrid's Italian coach, Carlo Ancelotti, avoided entering into the controversy over the possible starting line-up of Dani Olmo after being registered again as a Barcelona player, this Saturday in the run-up to the Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

"He is a great player, very strong... He will play and we must take away the quality he has with our defence," said Ancelotti in a press conference, focusing on the sporting aspect.

Olmo, along with his teammate Pau Víctor, received the precautionary measure from the Higher Sports Council (CSD), a state body, so that he can continue playing in competitions with the Catalan team.

The coach acknowledged that one of his concerns is to combat Hansi Flick's playing system that caused so much damage to his team in the 0-4 of the domestic championship.

"We have made a clear assessment of what happened to us, we started well, but not in the second half. We have to do well and avoid the mistakes of the second half," he explained before saying that "a Clasico puts more pressure on a final": "Playing against Barça is always special."
